Predestination

Predestination is the the doctrine that sets forth where man will spend eternity. "Pre" meaning "before" and "destination" meaning the final resting place that man will reside. So to predestinate is to know before where someone will finally rest.

God knew (before the foundation of the world) where the elect (God's chosen people) will have their final resting place, (when they die) in heaven.

Some think the doctrine of predestination means that all activity of man, while he is on this earth, is planned out and executed by God upon man. This is usually called total or absolute predestination. This interpretation is in error. Man is responsible while he is on this earth to obey God's commandments. To say that "God made me do it" is to make God responsible for man's sin and the author of sin.
